Do you know that a landfill site is treated for 30 years after its activity is terminated?
Every landfill site operator is obliged to ensure subsequent treatment after the closure.
How is a landfill site reclamation carried out?
Technical and biological reclamation of a landfill comprises:
- shaping the body of waste into the projected form ensuring its long-time stability,
- covering the waste with impervious and sealing layers following ČSN standards,
- forming topsoil and under-topsoil layers for subsequent integration of reclaimed landfill to landscape,
- seeding and bush planting.
Subsequent treatment of a landfill
After accomplishing the reclamatiom process, the subsequent treatment, which lasts 30 years, is regulated by legislation. The scope of treatment is defined by the relevant Regional Authority and includes especially:
- monitoring of subterranean waters,
- pumping and removal of leachate until complete drainage,
- degassing and utilization of biogas until complete exploitation,
- monitoring of the condition of a reclaimed landfill body,
- maintenance of green cover,
- archiving of all essential data about a landfill and disposed waste.
Reclamation funding
To provide complex service related to subsequent treatment of a closed landfill, the operator is obliged to generate a certain fee from every disposed ton. The fee is determined by legislation.
These financial means are deposited in a special bound reclamation account and can be drawn only with the permission of the relevant Regional Authority.
